Cowardly Assassination
of Prominent Iraqi Intellectual and Communist
The Iraqi Communist Party has mourned the big loss of comrade Kamil Shiaa as a result of a cowardly assassination on 23 August 2008 in Baghdad. The martyred comrade was a prominent figure among Iraqi intellectuals and party activists in the field of culture. He was a senior advisor to the Ministry of Culture, and also a member of the editorial board of Al-Thakafa Al-Jadida (New Culture), the leading cultural magazine published by the party since 1953, with important contributions.
The funeral of the late comrade took place on 24 August 2008 in Baghdad, attended by party leaders and official representatives. There has been strong and wide condemnation of the heinous crime across the Iraqi political spectrum, including the Iraqi president, democratic and civil society organisations.
Messages of condolences have also been received from communist parties and left organizations in many countries, including Sudan, Jordan, Bahrain, USA, Britain, Chile, Iran, Spain, Austria, Finland, Germany, the Czech republic, South Africa, Norway, Denmark.
